Lion Air Plane Skids Off Runway

JAKARTA

A pilot was suspended on Tuesday after his Lion Air jet carrying nearly 170 passengers skidded off a runway and plunged into a muddy field, an official said.

Nobody was hurt in the accident, which took place at the Supadio airport in West Kalimantan province.

“An air safety team has gone to the site to investigate the cause of the accident,” Transport Ministry spokesman Bambang Ervan said, adding that the jet had arrived from Jakarta.

“We temporarily suspended the pilot until we concluded the investigation,” he said.

The Boeing 737 was carrying 169 passengers and six crew members when it overshot the runway.

“The plane’s body has not been evacuated as an engine is submerged in the mud,” airport employee Yudianto said, adding that the airport remained close due to the incident.
