A fire broke out early on Thursday morning in the Kuta Square shopping area, causing damage to several stores.

The blaze erupted shortly after 7am in a shop selling surfing apparel, and quickly leapt to adjacent stores, local residents at the scene said.

Six units of the fire brigade arrived and doused the flames. Tourists were already in the area, which is beside the famous Kuta Beach, at the time.

Firemen said they suspect the blaze was a result of a short circuit in electricty wiring.
