TAIPEI
A strong 6.9 magnitude quake struck southeast of Taiwan on Monday, the US Geological Survey said, but no tsunami warning was immediately issued.
The quake hit at 10:59am at a depth of 10 kilometres with an epicentre 269 kilometres off the east Taiwanese city of Taitung, the USGS said.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, according to the interior ministry’s fire agency.
An earthquake in Taiwan in 2006 severed fibre-optic cables and severely disrupted communications in Indonesia.
