Once a Decade: The Hindu faithful from all over Bali converged on the island’s most sacred temple, Besakih on the slopes of the Mt. Agung volcano in Karangasem regency, on Sunday, taking many hours longer than normal to reach the destination and causing massive gridlock on the roads. They gathered for a 10-year island-purification ceremony called Panca Wali Krama, which runs for a month and ended this Friday. The revered site was also playing host to the annual, weeklong Bhatara Turun Kabeh ceremony in which all the religion’s gods descend to Besakih Temple to inspect the humans there.
