Crackdown on Shirtless Motorcyclists

DENPASAR ~ Along with a crackdown on motorcyclists without licenses, registration or helmets, Denpasar’s Traffic Police said they will also be pulling over riders without shirts.

A spokesman said “Operation Sympathetic” would be focused primarily on the streets of Kuta, where shirtless foreign, male tourists were often seen riding motorcycles.

The spokesman said Bali’s streets and highways were in need of a “standard of ethics and normal behavior” for motorists, adding that even a t-shirt could lessen injuries in the event of a crash or fall from a bike.

He said for the first few days of the operation, police were presenting t-shirts to those caught bare-chested on the streets.
