LOS ANGELES ~ Teen vampire film Twilight sunk its fangs into the North American box office at the weekend, scaring up US$69.6 million on its debut, final figures showed.

The movie, based on Stephanie Meyer’s bestselling novel, follows the adventures of teenage heroine played by Kristen Stewart who falls in love with a classmate who happens to be a vampire, British actor Robert Pattinson.

In second place was new James Bond thriller Quantum of Solace, which pocketed $26.7 million on its second weekend of release, figures from box office tracker Exhibitor Relations showed.

The latest installment of the long-running Bond franchise proved too strong for family movie Bolt, the latest offering produced by John Lasseter, the Oscar-winning animation guru behind classics Cars and Toy Story.

The Disney Animation adventure, which earned $26.2 million, features John Travolta providing the voice of a mutt who believes he is a superhero, with teen idol Miley Cyrus providing the voice of his companion Penny.

In fourth place was Madagascar 2: Escape to Africa, featuring Ben Stiller and Chris Rock as the voices for the wisecracking zoo animals, which took $15.6 million, ahead of fifth place comedy Role Models with $7.3 million.

Clint Eastwood’s period drama Changeling, about a mother played by Angelina Jolie desperate to find her missing boy in 1920s Los Angeles, was in sixth with $2.7 million.

Disney’s clean-cut High School Musical 3: Senior Year dropped to seventh spot with $2 million on its fourth week of release.

Eighth place was occupied by World War II drama The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, which took $1.64 million.

The film is based on Irish novelist John Boyne’s 2006 novel about the son of a Nazi commander who befriends a child prisoner at Auschwitz.

Raunchy comedy Zack and Miri Make a Porno, about financially strapped friends played by Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks who try to make a do-it-yourself pornographic movie but end up falling in love, was ninth with $1.6 million.

The Secret Life of Bees, based on the novel of the same name, rounded out the top 10 with $1.3 million.
