DENPASAR, Bali — Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has warned of unusually high tides along parts of Bali’s coastline from November 8 to 11, raising concerns about possible coastal flooding and disruptions to activities near the shore.
The warning comes ahead of a new moon on Monday, November 9, which could increase sea levels during high tide, according to BMKG’s Region III office in Denpasar.
Cahyo Nugroho, head of the regional meteorological agency, said on Friday, November 6, that the timing and height of peak tides would vary across different coastal areas.
The forecast is based on sea-level monitoring and tidal predictions, with authorities urging residents and businesses near the coast to remain alert.
BMKG identified six areas of Bali where coastal communities could experience higher-than-usual tides between Sunday and Wednesday:
The warning covers stretches of Bali’s southern coastline, including areas popular with international visitors. However, BMKG has not indicated that every beach within these districts will experience flooding.
Officials said the higher tides could disrupt loading and unloading operations at ports, affect coastal residential areas, and interfere with salt farming and inland fish farming activities.
Coastal flooding, locally known as banjir rob, can occur when seawater rises high enough to inundate low-lying land, particularly during periods of unusually high tides.
The November 9 new moon could contribute to higher tidal levels because of the gravitational alignment of the sun and moon.
However, the warning concerns rising sea levels rather than a blanket forecast of dangerous waves across Bali.
BMKG has not announced beach closures or issued a general ban on swimming or other coastal activities in connection with this tidal warning.
Residents, tourists and businesses operating close to the shoreline are advised to monitor local conditions, particularly in low-lying areas that may be vulnerable to temporary seawater flooding.
The agency also stressed that the timing of the highest tides would differ by location, meaning conditions may change throughout the four-day warning period.

The high tide advisory remains in effect from November 8 through November 11, 2026.
