LOMBOK, Indonesia — A 28-year-old Dutch tourist was evacuated by helicopter from Mount Rinjani after suffering a leg injury that left her unable to stand during a hike on Thursday.
The tourist, identified by the initials ET, was injured near Batu Beleq on the Sembalun hiking route. Mount Rinjani National Park officials received the report at around 7:27 a.m. and began coordinating an emergency evacuation.
Park authorities said ET needed prompt medical attention because of the injury to her leg. After preparations were completed, a helicopter was dispatched and the evacuation began at around 12:25 p.m.
The aircraft transported her from the mountain area to Benoa Heliport in Bali, where she was transferred for further medical treatment.
Officials said the helicopter evacuation was carried out under the premium insurance coverage held by the tourist.
The rescue comes as authorities continue to stress the importance of preparation for hikers attempting Mount Rinjani, one of Indonesia’s most popular trekking destinations.
Astekita Ardiaristo of the Mount Rinjani National Park office said hikers should prioritise physical readiness and appropriate equipment before beginning the climb.
He also reminded visitors that reaching the summit should not be the only measure of a successful trek, with returning safely remaining the priority.
Authorities did not report that the tourist was in critical condition, and no spinal injury or other serious trauma has been confirmed.
The incident adds to a series of recent mountain rescues on Rinjani in which injured foreign hikers have required coordinated medical evacuation, including helicopter assistance when conditions allow.
