UBUD, Bali — Two French tourists have been deported from Bali after being caught stealing food, drinks and other goods from supermarkets in Ubud, Gianyar.

The two tourists, identified by police as 21-year-old NHB and RLBZ, were involved in separate shoplifting cases.

Gianyar Deputy Police Chief Kompol Willa Jully Nendissa said NHB had been in Bali for about two months when he ran out of money.

He then stole food, drinks and several household items from a supermarket on Jalan Raya Pengosekan, Ubud.

“All the stolen goods were for their own consumption,” Willa said during a press conference at Gianyar Police headquarters on Wednesday (September 9).

The theft was discovered after supermarket management checked the store the following day and reported the incident to police.

Officers later found NHB at his accommodation.

The case was resolved without prosecution after NHB agreed to compensate the supermarket for all the stolen goods. The management accepted the settlement.

NHB was subsequently deported from Indonesia.

A separate case involved RLBZ, another 21-year-old French national who was caught shoplifting at a supermarket in Peliatan, Ubud.

Police said the case was also settled peacefully after the stolen goods were compensated for.

RLBZ was deported about a month ago, Willa said.

Foreign Tourists Also Among Theft Victims

Police said foreign visitors have also been victims of theft and robbery in Gianyar.

A Singaporean national identified as MK was robbed while riding a motorcycle along Jalan Bisma, Ubud, at around 10.30pm on July 14.

Police said a suspect identified as INT allegedly snatched MK’s gold necklace, valued at around Rp56 million.

The case is still under investigation.

A French national identified as SMG also reported losing €600, worth around Rp12 million, after the money was allegedly stolen from a villa on Jalan Suweta, Ubud.

A Belarusian national, identified as IK, reported a similar incident at a villa on the same road, with US$400, or around Rp7 million, allegedly stolen.

The five cases were among 55 theft cases involving 56 suspects uncovered by Gianyar Police since July.

Willa said the cases included motorcycle theft, ordinary theft and aggravated theft, with incidents occurring on roads, in residential areas and at construction sites.
