
Soekarno-Hatta Airport resumes operations after a temporary closure due to volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau.
Five airports in Indonesia resumed operations early Tuesday after being temporarily closed due to volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau, the Transport Ministry said.
Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Banten, Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta and Husein Sastranegara Airport in Bandung resumed operations at 12:01 a.m. on September 8.
Budiarto Curug Airport and Pondok Cabe Airport, both in Banten, reopened at 2:25 a.m., Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi said during an inspection at Soekarno-Hatta Airport.
“The closure of Soekarno-Hatta Airport and several other airports affected by Mount Anak Krakatau’s volcanic ash has ended,” Dudy said in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The reopening followed safety assessments of the affected airports and surrounding airspace.
Authorities required inspections of aircraft by airports and airlines before flights could resume. Pilots and flight crews must also be aware of restricted airspace areas where volcanic ash has been detected.
Two airports in Lampung — Radin Inten II and Muhammad Taufiq Kiemas — remained closed pending further assessment of volcanic ash conditions, according to the Transport Ministry.
Atung Bungsu Airport in Pagar Alam, South Sumatra, had already resumed normal operations at 9 a.m. on Monday.
Volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau began affecting airspace and airport operations on Saturday, September 5, prompting eight airports to suspend operations.
The affected airports were Soekarno-Hatta, Halim Perdanakusuma, Radin Inten II, Husein Sastranegara, Budiarto Curug, Pondok Cabe, Muhammad Taufiq Kiemas and Atung Bungsu.
With the latest reopening, most of the affected airports have resumed operations, while two airports in Lampung remain closed for further monitoring.
Dudy urged airlines to continue coordinating with airport operators, aviation authorities and other agencies while monitoring volcanic ash conditions and complying with aviation safety requirements.
