LABUAN BAJO, Indonesia — An Italian tourist was injured after jumping into the sea from a tourist boat near Kelor Island, Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara, on Monday afternoon (August 10).

The 34-year-old man, identified by the initials GT, suffered injuries to his lower back and arm after hitting the edge of the boat. He briefly lost consciousness following the incident.

Bernadinus Darma, head of the Labuan Bajo Health Quarantine Office, said GT was reportedly preparing to enter the water when the accident occurred.

“The tourist was about to enter the water, possibly to swim. When he jumped, his lower back and arm hit the edge of the boat, causing bruising and a brief loss of consciousness,” Darma said on Tuesday morning.

GT was evacuated to Marina Labuan Bajo following the incident before being referred to Siloam Hospital Labuan Bajo by health quarantine officers.

Darma said the tourist was initially diagnosed with an acute lower back injury, with pain radiating down his leg. His muscle strength was difficult to assess at the time, he added.

Stephanus Risdiyanto, head of the Class III Harbourmaster and Port Authority Office (KSOP) in Labuan Bajo, confirmed the incident.

He said authorities were still gathering information to establish the full chronology of the accident.

“The incident has already been handled by the health quarantine office at the port,” Stephanus said.

Authorities have not yet released further details about GT’s condition or the circumstances leading up to the accident.
