DENPASAR, Bali — Police are investigating a suspected bag-snatching in Bali’s Pecatu area after CCTV footage showing a woman believed to be a foreign tourist being knocked to the ground circulated widely on social media.
The incident took place on Jalan Pantai Bingin in Pecatu, South Kuta, on the night of June 28. CCTV footage shows the woman walking alone along the roadside when a man riding a motorcycle approached from behind, allegedly grabbed her handbag and sped away. The force of the snatch caused the woman to lose her balance and fall onto the road.
The video quickly spread across social media, prompting officers from South Kuta Police to visit the scene and begin gathering information.
“South Kuta Police personnel immediately conducted checks at the scene after learning about the incident and are currently collecting initial information,” Iptu I Gede Adi Saputra Jaya, public relations officer for Denpasar Police, said.
Police said the victim had not filed an official report as of Tuesday, preventing investigators from confirming her identity or nationality. Officers are reviewing CCTV footage and speaking with witnesses as they work to identify the suspect.
Authorities have urged the victim, or anyone with direct knowledge of the incident, to report it to South Kuta Police or the nearest police station to assist the investigation.
“We are committed to following up on every report professionally based on facts and available evidence,” Adi said. “We also urge the public not to speculate while the investigation is ongoing.”
While police continue their investigation, the incident serves as a reminder for tourists to stay aware of their surroundings, particularly when walking alone in quieter areas or carrying valuables in public. Reporting crimes promptly can also help investigators respond more effectively and improve the chances of identifying suspects.
