LABUAN BAJO, Indonesia — Indonesian search and rescue teams on Friday entered the eighth day of operations to locate three people missing after a tourist boat sank in waters off Komodo National Park, authorities said.
The victims are Fernando Martin Carreras, a coach with Valencia’s women’s reserve team, and his two sons, who were aboard the wooden tourist vessel Putri Sakinah when it capsized in rough seas late last month.
Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) said a joint SAR team deployed sonar equipment, underwater navigation devices and thermal drones to expand the search area around Padar Island, part of the Komodo National Park in East Nusa Tenggara province.
“Search efforts today remain focused on nearby islands, surface and underwater searches, and the use of sonar and thermal drones,” said Fathur Rahman, head of the Basarnas Maumere office.
A total of 58 personnel and 11 vessels were involved in Friday’s operation, covering search areas of up to 15.4 nautical miles, he added. Despite the expanded effort, no new findings had been reported by midday.
Basarnas earlier extended the search operation by three days, from Jan. 2 to Jan. 4, after the initial seven-day mission failed to locate all victims.
The boat sank on Dec. 26 at around 8:30 p.m. local time while sailing from Komodo Island to Padar Island. Eleven people were on board, including six tourists from Spain, four crew members and a tour guide.

Seven people survived the incident, including Carreras’ wife, Mar Martinez Ortuno, and their seven-year-old daughter. One of the couple’s daughters was later found dead on Dec. 29.
Ortuno said the vessel was struck by two large waves before it capsized. She and her daughter were on the upper deck at the time, while her husband and three children were sleeping in cabins in the lower hull.
“The boat was hit by two waves. After the second wave, it tilted and then sank,” she said in a written statement released by a local tourism association official.
Ortuno and her daughter managed to climb out of the vessel and reach a lifeboat, along with the crew and tour guide. Carreras and his three other children did not resurface.
Authorities said the waters around Komodo National Park are known for strong currents and unpredictable sea conditions, particularly at night.
Search efforts remain ongoing.
