French Tourist Died in Bali’s Kelingking Beach After Ignoring Warnings

Rescuers evacuate French tourist swept away by waves at Kelingking Beach, Nusa Penida, on Oct 15, 2025.

KLUNGKUNG, Bali – A French tourist died in Bali after being swept away by giant waves at the famous Kelingking Beach, Nusa Penida, on Wednesday (October 15, 2025). The victim, identified as Alena Andreevna, 32, reportedly ignored safety warnings not to approach the water due to dangerous sea conditions.

Authorities confirmed that Andreevna and four friends had arrived at the beach around 10:30 a.m. Despite warnings from locals and beach officers, they decided to descend the steep cliff to take photos near the shoreline. While posing, a sudden large wave hit and dragged the victim into the sea.

Nusa Penida Police Chief AKP I Ketut Kesuma Jaya said the area is known for its strong currents and unpredictable waves, especially during high tides. “Before the tragedy, she had already been cautioned not to go near the water because the waves were large and very strong,” he said.

Upon receiving reports of the incident, personnel from Nusa Penida Police, Basarnas, Koramil, and village security officers immediately responded. The team faced extremely difficult conditions — a narrow, slippery 200-meter cliff path made the evacuation dangerous and slow.

The joint rescue team had to rappel down using ropes to reach the victim’s body, which had washed up at the base of the cliff. The evacuation took nearly three hours, as officers carried the stretcher uphill through steep, rocky terrain while ensuring the victim’s body was safely secured.

“The evacuation was very challenging and full of risk. The terrain is extreme, but all personnel worked with dedication and great caution to complete this humanitarian mission,” Kesuma Jaya said.

By around 6:10 p.m., the victim’s body was successfully brought to the top and transported for further examination. The rescue effort involved collaboration among Nusa Penida Police, Basarnas, Koramil, and local residents, all of whom played an active role in the operation.

Kesuma Jaya extended his condolences to the victim’s family and praised the joint team’s commitment. “We express our deepest sympathies for this tragic incident. Our team worked tirelessly in a very difficult environment. We remind all visitors to obey safety advisories and never go down to the beach when the waves are high,” he added.

Authorities emphasized that while Kelingking Beach remains one of Bali’s most iconic destinations, its narrow coastline and powerful surf make it one of the island’s most dangerous beaches during rough sea conditions.
