BULELENG, Bali – Spanish tourist dies in Pemuteran while spear fishing in the waters of Tangkad Menaum, Gerokgak District, Buleleng, on Sunday afternoon (Aug 17). The victim, identified as 37-year-old Lopes Pino Perran, is believed to have suffered a blackout from lack of oxygen while diving too deep.
“Yes, there was indeed a case of a foreign national drowning in Gerokgak waters, precisely in Pemuteran, Banjar Dinas Pala Sari,” Buleleng Police spokesperson Iptu Yohana Rosalin Diaz confirmed on Monday (Aug 18, 2025).
The incident began when Perran joined three locals—Ketut Diatmika (41), Putu Oka Wirawan (29), and Komang Desmen Wirawan—for a spear fishing trip from Tanjung Bukit Ser Beach. Despite repeated warnings not to dive deeper than five meters, Perran continued to dive alone.
By around 1:00 p.m. local time, he went missing. His companions circled the area by boat four times and attempted manual dives up to five meters, but found nothing. Additional divers later discovered his body lifeless at a depth of around 20 meters.
“It is suspected that the victim experienced a blackout while spear fishing at depth, as his equipment was not suitable for such conditions,” Diaz explained. The body was evacuated by the Water Police unit to the shore.
The tragedy adds to a growing list of foreign tourists losing their lives during marine activities in Bali, highlighting the hidden dangers of underwater sports often underestimated by visitors.
