Fast Boat Capsize Bali Kills Two Tourists, One Crew Still Missing

Rescuers attempt to recover the overturned fast boat in Sanur, Bali, after it was hit by high waves.

DENPASAR, Bali – Fast Boat Capsize Bali has left two Chinese tourists dead and one Indonesian crew member missing after the Dolphin Cruise 2 vessel overturned near Sanur Port on Tuesday (August 5).

The boat, carrying 75 passengers and 5 crew, was struck by sudden high waves up to 4 meters as it attempted to dock. It flipped and ran aground within meters of the shoreline, turning what began as a routine crossing from Nusa Penida into a maritime disaster.

Authorities identified the deceased as Shio Quo Hong (20) and Hanqing Yu (37), both Chinese nationals. A crew member, I Kadek Adi Jaya Dinata (23), remains missing. A total of 73 passengers and four other crew were rescued, with many suffering minor injuries.

“We express our deepest condolences for the victims of this tragic incident,” said Muhammad Masyhud, Director General of Sea Transportation.

Sudden Wave Turned Calm Voyage into Chaos

The boat was confirmed to be seaworthy and operating within its capacity—75 passengers and 5 crew—according to Aprianus Hangki, Head of KSOP Benoa.

“Weather conditions shifted rapidly. As the boat approached the dock, a large wave struck from behind, flooding the vessel. The captain attempted to reverse and deploy the life raft, but a second wave capsized the boat,” said Kombes Ariasandy, spokesperson for Bali Police.

Eyewitnesses and rescue officials described scenes of panic as passengers were thrown into the sea. Local fishermen and SAR teams rushed to help, deploying a life raft to assist evacuation.

Ongoing Search and Response Efforts

As of Wednesday morning, the search continues for the missing crew member. Teams from Basarnas, TNI AL, Polairud, and other agencies are involved. The capsized boat remains near the shoreline, battered by strong surf.

KSOP Benoa issued a navigational warning for the area and established a crisis post to coordinate ongoing operations.

Compensation and Safety Reminders

Benyamin Bob Panjaitan of Jasa Raharja Bali confirmed compensation for the victims:

  • Rp 50 million for each deceased
  • Up to Rp 20 million for injured survivors

“We urge all fast boat operators to ensure passengers wear life jackets, especially during rough seas,” Aprianus added.

After a temporary closure for evacuation, Sanur Port has resumed normal operations. The final fast boat departed for Nusa Penida after 17:00 WITA on the same day.
