DENPASAR, Bali – An Australian tourist hijacks car in Bali in a violent incident that escalated into a high-speed rampage and arson, authorities confirmed on Sunday, August 3.
The tourist, identified only by the initials RJW, allegedly forced a local resident, IKWK, out of his parked Toyota Avanza on Jalan Batu Belig, Seminyak, around 5:30 AM, before speeding off recklessly. During his escape, RJW reportedly struck two pedestrians, including a security guard who tried to intervene.
“The suspect seized the car by force and drove away at high speed, endangering others on the road,” said AKP I Ketut Sukadi, spokesperson for the Denpasar Police, in an official statement.
The situation worsened when the stolen car was later discovered completely burned in Padangsambian, West Denpasar. Authorities suspect the suspect deliberately set fire to the vehicle in an attempt to destroy evidence.
“We’re still investigating the motive. For now, the Australian national is in custody,” Sukadi added.
Initial damage estimates indicate a loss of around IDR 150 million for the car’s owner. No fatalities were reported, but the two pedestrians suffered minor injuries.
The suspect is currently being held at North Kuta Police Headquarters, while the case is under further investigation. Police are also coordinating with immigration and the Australian consulate regarding the legal process.
