DENPASAR, Bali – Promised US$100 by Cindy, Mzimela Caught Smuggling Meth in Bali. A South African woman, Lungile Ntombenhle Mzimela (32), was arrested at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport after being caught smuggling 990.83 grams of methamphetamine hidden in her underwear.
The arrest took place on Sunday (July 13) shortly after Mzimela arrived in Bali. During an X-ray screening at the international terminal, customs officers detected a suspicious package on her body. A subsequent physical search revealed a package of meth concealed in her underwear. The operation was a joint effort between Bali Customs, Immigration, and the National Narcotics Agency (BNNP) Bali.
BNNP Bali Enforcement Chief Kombes I Made Sinar Subawa said Mzimela acted as a drug courier. She admitted receiving the meth from a woman named Cindy in Johannesburg, South Africa.
“The suspect was promised US$100 and IDR 1 million to deliver the drugs to a buyer in Bali,” Sinar told reporters during a press conference on Thursday (July 24, 2025).
However, after Mzimela’s arrest, Cindy cut all contact and could no longer be reached. “We attempted to trace the intended recipient, but Cindy stopped responding, and her phone number became unreachable,” Sinar said.
Mzimela appeared unwell during the press conference and was taken to a clinic shortly afterward. LN has been charged under Article 113 Paragraph (2) or Article 112 Paragraph (2) of Law Number 35 of 2009 on Narcotics, carrying a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
