MATARAM – The summit trail of Mount Rinjani from Pelawangan 4 has been temporarily closed following a tragic incident involving a Brazilian hiker who fell near Cemara Nunggal. The closure is aimed at facilitating rescue operations and ensuring safety for visitors and rescue personnel.
“Climbs are temporarily closed to accelerate the evacuation of the victim,” said Yarman, Head of Mount Rinjani National Park Authority (TNGR) in West Nusa Tenggara, on Tuesday (June 24).
The victim, identified as JDSP (27), fell into a ravine near the Segara Anak lake area during her summit attempt on Saturday morning (June 21). She was later found on Monday (June 23) around 500 meters from where she was last seen, using thermal drone imaging.
Extreme Terrain Hampers Rescue
“The victim was found with no visible movement,” said Muhamad Hariyadi, Head of the Mataram SAR Office. He added that the evacuation has been challenging due to steep cliffs and thick fog at the site.
The summit trail from Pelawangan Sembalun to Rinjani’s peak has been closed indefinitely, though other hiking routes remain open up to Pelawangan 4. Authorities have urged hikers to remain cautious and prioritize safety.
Multi-Agency Rescue Underway
The search and evacuation operation involves multiple agencies, including the Mataram SAR Office, Mount Rinjani National Park, TNI, Polri, East Lombok BPBD, local SAR units, mountain guides, and volunteers.
“We ask for public cooperation until the evacuation is declared complete,” Yarman said.
Despite the trail closure, visitors may still access other sections of the Rinjani hiking area below the summit route.
