Vanessa Louise Crimmins attends trial at Denpasar District Court.

DENPASAR – An Australian tourist, Vanessa Louise Crimmins, is on trial in Bali for allegedly stealing two laptops from Popular Deli supermarket in Tibubeneng, North Kuta, Badung. Prosecutors have requested an eight-month prison sentence for the 55-year-old

“We demand that the court sentence Vanessa Louise Crimmins to eight months in prison,” said prosecutor Lintang Jendro Rahmadita during the hearing at Denpasar District Court on Thursday (6/2/2025).

Prosecutors allege that Crimmins stole laptops belonging to Ni Nyoman Ari Purwaningsih and Ardi Nurcahyadi, violating Article 362 of the Indonesian Penal Code (KUHP).

“We request that the panel of judges declare the defendant guilty under Article 362 of the Penal Code,” Lintang stated.

Following the prosecution’s demands, Crimmins intended to present her defense statement through her translator. However, the judges postponed the hearing until next week to allow time for the defense to be translated into Indonesian.

The Paddington, Australia native allegedly stole a laptop while visiting the deli. As she walked past the store, she noticed a gray bag containing Ari’s laptop left on a chair outside.

“The defendant developed the intent to take the bag. She then took it and carried it into the store,” Lintang said.

After shopping, Vanessa reportedly saw another bag containing Ardi’s laptop and took it as well, bringing both to her accommodation in Tibubeneng.

Crimmins admitted to the theft, claiming she was under the influence of medication.

Her trial continues next week, where her defense will be formally presented and reviewed by the court.
