Canadian Tourist Arrested in Bali for Jewelry Theft After Traffic Accident

Denpasar, Bali – A Canadian tourist was arrested in Bali after allegedly stealing jewelry from a local store. His escape attempt ended in a traffic accident, resulting in his immediate capture.

The incident unfolded on the morning of Thursday, January 30, around 9:43 AM WITA. Christopher Boyd Young, a 43-year-old Canadian national, walked into a jewelry store on Jalan Danau Tamblingan in Sanur. Eyewitnesses reported that Young quickly grabbed a necklace and pendant from a display counter, tucked them into his bag, and bolted out of the store on his motorbike.

Before making his exit, Young reportedly made a strange comment to a store employee, saying, “Today is Chinese New Year.” The remark left staff puzzled, but they quickly realized what had happened and alerted local security. A search for Young began immediately.

However, Young’s escape plan didn’t go as smoothly as he might have hoped. Just moments after leaving the store, he collided with a car nearby. Police officers patrolling the area arrived at the scene, initially to assist with the accident. But when jewelry store staff showed up and identified Young as the thief, the officers took him into custody.

“He suffered an eye injury from the fall,” explained Denpasar Police spokesperson AKP I Ketut Sukadi during a press briefing on Friday, January 31. “The arrest was made after store employees reported the theft and identified him as the suspect.”

After his arrest, Young was handed over to the Denpasar Immigration Office for further processing. Authorities confirmed that he would be deported to Canada as part of standard immigration procedures.

This incident highlights the quick response of Bali’s local authorities and community members in addressing criminal activity. The collaboration between store staff, security personnel, and police ensured that the situation was resolved efficiently.
