Police in Bali said an American tourist who was suffering from depression committed suicide at a villa in Gianyar Regency’s Sukawati District.
The victim, a 46-year-old resident with the initials HD, was found hanged in the bathroom at 9am on Tuesday. The person who found her was an acquaintance who was helping her overcome her struggles.
“The witness accompanied the victim to counseling. The victim was experiencing severe depression, so she was staying [at the villa] for rehab and to find somewhere peaceful to stay,” Sukawati Precinct Chief Made Ariawan said.
Police said HD checked in at the villa the previous day, and had gone to yoga in the afternoon. Police suspect she hanged herself six hours before she was found on Tuesday.
In addition, police found antidepressants in the victim’s purse.
HD’s body is now at the Sanglah General Hospital in Denpasar, as local authorities are coordinating with the US Consulate for the next steps in handling the victim’s remains.
