Vice Governor Encourages Village Council to Socialize Waste Management

Vice Governor of Bali Ketut Sudikerta encouraging figures of “Pakraman” or indigenous villages to participate in socializing waste management to the society in their respective villages.

“The issue of garbage is not only the responsibility of the provincial government of Bali, but need the synergy of regencies / city up to the village to realize good waste management and provide benefits to the community,” said Sudikerta in the Socialization of Plastic Waste Management, in Denpasar, on Monday.

According to him, to overcome the problem of garbage, especially inorganic waste is required seriousness and commitment. The Government through Environment Agency of Bali will prepare the regulation of Pakraman involvement.

“Through this meeting, we want to unite the commitment between the provincial, regencies, city, and educators, Pakraman, NGO and others in realizing Bali Green Province,” said Sudikerta.

To manage the garbage, he added, the society can start it easily that is by sorting organic and inorganic garbage. In addition they must be discipline by not littering.

“In addition, I expect the community to reduce the use of plastic bags when shopping. It’s better if people carry handy craft bags because it can reduce plastic waste and affect to the passage of creative economic activity in the community,” he said.

Sudikerta argued, the role of the community leaders in the village is very important to give insight to the community to apply sustainable hygienic behavior.

Especially for plastic waste management, he said, by the existing of PT Enviro Pallets in Tabanan, people can get more income from plastic waste collection. In the future, the transport of plastic waste to the waste plant will be improved, especially in the matter of will the waste transport be the responsibility of the plant or the government of regencies / city and province.

Meanwhile, the amount of plastic waste generated in Bali in 2014 as many as 10 thousand cubic meters per day which consists of 5,300 cubic meters of urban waste and 4,700 cubic meters of rural areas waste.

Of the that amount, contained 680 cubic meters of plastic waste per day (12 percent), 939 cubic meters (17%)  of inorganic waste and 3,681 cubic meters  of organic waste (71%) per day.
