Vehicle Moratorium Should not See only on Vehicle’s Age

DENPASAR ~

Indonesian Transportation Society (MTI) of Bali Province proposed to the provincial government not to look only in terms of the age of the car when applying moratorium of car.

“The new vehicle which is not feasible should not be allowed to operate on the road. The new vehicle pollution also could be higher than the old vehicle,” said Chairman of MTI Bali Made Rai Ridharta in Denpasar, on Saturday.

But, he said, if the old vehicle is maintained well, and all components are new, it is certainly roadworthy.

“We generally agree with the plan to limit the number of vehicles, but should be reviewed again, related to the moratorium, the number of cars in Bali or the number of vehicles that operate on the road,” he said.

According to him, the numbers of vehicles in Bali do not need any moratorium, but it is more appropriate for the number of vehicles that on the road.

“If we have five cars, will we run them all? Of course not. Therefore, we must first calculate if a moratorium on existing vehicles on the road, how many vehicles are running in a certain time on a certain road,” he said .

He pointed out that in urban streets, the vehicle can drive only with a speed of 30 kilometers per hour.

“From there can be calculated, with such speed, how many vehicles within one kilometer,” he said.

Previously Bali Provincial Government has stated that they will further examine the results of a preliminary study of the local Revenue Office in collaboration with the University of Udayana and Warmadewa, related to the moratorium on the growth of car on the island.

Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika said the related results of a preliminary study stated that a moratorium on the growth of vehicles on the island is worthy from various aspects (economic, juridical, sociological, and environmental), but there should be a further study of the various sides.

According to Pastika, related to the age of vehicles that will be in moratorium, also still requires further study, because if a vehicle in Bali is getting denser, it will make more fuss. “If the age of the vehicle is too old, it will be inefficient, and the emission is also high,” he said.
