Indonesian Workers’ Unions Strongest in Southeast Asia

JAKARTA ~

Coordinator of the Trade Union Solidarity Center of Finland (SASK) for Asia Pacific Marlon Quesada said the activity of the Indonesian workers’ unions was the strongest in Southeast Asia in the last two years.

“The experience of watching the Indonesian workers’ unions conduct their activities was inspiring, and I will surely share your story with my colleagues,” Marlon stated on Wednesday during a meeting with members of Antara news agency’s workers’ union (SPANTARA) in Jakarta.

According to him, the active role of the Indonesian workers’ unions in fighting for the improvement of workers’ welfare had attracted the attention of workers’ unions in other ASEAN countries such as Thailand, Myanmar and the Philippines.

Marlon added that the unity of all workers’ unions in Indonesia was important despite the conflicting opinions of workers ahead of the presidential election on July 9, 2014.

“The fight for workers’ welfare in a country will succeed only if all workers’ unions are united,” Marlon remarked.
