Footballers Face Life Over Crystal Meth

DENPASAR

Two Nigerians recruited to play football for Indonesian premier league clubs are now facing the prospect of life jail terms for smuggling two kilograms of methamphetamine (crystal meth) into Bali.

The men, aged 39 and 24, are on trial at the Denpasar District Court, where a panel of judges heard preliminary evidence in mid-December.

The court was told the men were arrested in a coordinated operation by the Customs and Excise Agency, Bali Police and the National Police after two men, an Indonesian and a Filipino, were caught at Ngurah Rai International Airport on July 13 carrying two kilograms of crystal meth.

They told police the consignment had been ordered by the two Nigerians now on trial.
