UPDATE: Distressed Qantas Plane Attempting Emergency Landing at Singapore

JAKARTA

A blast aboard a Qantas plane as it was flying over Batam on Thursday morning was forcing an emergency landing at Singapore, police said.

Barelang Police chief Eka Yudha said the plane was circling Singapore to burn off fuel ahead of an emergency landing, as per standard procedure.

The Agence France-Press news agency reported that the flight, which originated in Singapore and was bound for Sydney, was experiencing engine trouble.

“The plane is still flying and it’s trying to use up its fuel … it will probably take another 45 minutes,” Transport Ministry official Bambang Ervan told AFP.

Witnesses said a door of the aircraft fell onto the Batam Center ferry terminal. Metro TV broadcast a photograph taken by a Batam resident that appeared to show a destroyed piece of an airplane with the familiar red-and-white livery of the Australian national carrier.

The Indonesian industrial island of Batam is near to Singapore.
