Just days into the job, Bali’s new police chief Paulus Purwoko said this week he would set up a special police hotline to receive reports from the public on illegal activities such as gambling.

“We don’t want to turn Bali into an island of hell – we need to stop gambling, illegal manufacturing of alcohol and prostitution,” Bali parliament speaker Ida Bagus Putu Wesnawa said after meeting Purwoko on Wednesday.

The police chief said the number – a cellphone number akin to one famously launched by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono – had already been set up and would soon be announced.
