SERANGAN ISLAND

A Russian tourist died while surfing off Serangan Island near Sanur, police said on Wednesday.

The deceased was named as Anggelian Marchenko, 24, and had been surfing alone at the barren but surfing-popular island on Tuesday. It is believed he drowned.

Marchenko’s body was discovered by another tourist, who first saw an unattended surfboard floating in the ocean, said South Denpasar Police chief Gede Ganefo.

The tourist called friends and together they brought the victim to shore, he said.

“But he was already dead by then,” Genefo said.

The body was brought to Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar.
