Around 2,500 Europeans on holiday in Bali who have been unable to return home due to cancelled flights remained on the island on Thursday, airport authorities said.

British, Dutch, German and Italians were among the nationalities still unable to return home because no flights had yet been scheduled, Ngurah Rai International Airport management said.

European airspace opened up on Wednesday after being closed since last Thursday due to a massive ash cloud emitted by a volcano in Iceland.
